Hotel Amèrica is part of Igualada. It is a well-known point for passing through foreigners and old visitors who used to stop in their way to It has always had a traveller’s service nature and that’s why it was placed where they used to go by. At the beginning, it was next to the N-II road in its way through the Rambla where, in the 40’s, Bar Americà was founded. When the road changed its location, the building -the way we know it today- was opened, and continued being built in different stages: the first one, being a canteen and motel, and the following, a city hotel.
On the 9th March, we visited the hotel where we were received by the director, Mr. Carles Carol, who showed us around the facilities and the hotel backstage: the kitchen, the food storeroom, the old laundry and drying room, the boiler and the maintenance workshop, among others.
We had the chance of visiting a part of the hotel which is currently not shown to visitors but keeps all the details and charms from the 60’s. As a matter of fact, there, several commercials, music clips and films have been shot.
Afterwards, we visited the rooms and the director talked about the company running. The hotel’s typical guest is an entrepreneur passing through the city for business. The restaurant receives weddings, baptisms, First Communions and all kind of conventions.
The current financial crisis has left its mark in the company which had to adapt with a staff reorganisation. But this historical corporation of Igualada will be able to find the new stage it is meant to experience now, and it will keep being a referent for everyone, but above all, a meeting point.
